Our York Benchmarks Site

We got interested in benchmarks after finding a strange mark with a bit of metal near it on the step of a relative’s house. After identifying what it was (a rivet) we spotted more and more around York.

We researched what they were and found that as they are not used anymore they are decaying and disappearing at an alarming rate. So we decided to find as many as we can and photograph and catalogue them on this site. Our finding aids are old Ordnance Survey (OS) maps and the database at the OS web site.

I doubt this site is of any use to anyone other than those with an interest in benchmarks and social history. The best thing about putting it together for us is that it gives us regular walks around York visiting parts of the city that we otherwise wouldn’t go to.
